Interactions between the human user and the
machine are the main focus of this Master. Students learn about
various aspects of human-media interaction; ranging from basic
technological issues to advanced topics in natural modes of
interaction and intelligent media. This includes topics such as
speech
and natural language processing, virtual reality, robotics and
artificial intelligence. The study involves assignments to practice
the design of complex, multi-modal interfaces and courses that
examine
the human and societal factors of media and their interfaces.
Usability engineering, interface and interaction design are some of
the professions associated with this program.
Human Media Interaction does not merely
involve computer science research. The Master program is set up in
collaboration with other engineering sciences and also psychology,
sociology, philosophy and design studies. Students will spend a fair
amount of time developing and studying advanced interfaces in
interdisciplinary projects with students from various backgrounds:
engineering, human sciences, and art and design.
Programme Structure
The Master of Science Human Media Interaction is a two-year
program. The first year consists of introductory and advanced course
units, covering the various aspects of human media interaction and a
multi-disciplinary project in which advanced interfaces are designed
and studied. During the second year there is the possibility (with
some restrictions) to work for some months as an intern for a company
or another academic institute. The study concludes with a final
individual research project. The course modules are grouped into a
number of themes. For each of the themes we list a few modules below.
To a large extent, students can choose their focus of interest.
Human Computer Interaction:
interaction design, human factors in design, ergonomics.
Natural Interaction:
speech and language processing, affective computing, ambient
intelligence.
Detailed information about the constraints on the programme, and
overviews of the courses that can be followed in each quarter can
be found here: course information HMI-Master.

you will also find useful links related to the Final Project.
Note that each student needs to submit his or her individual
course
programme to the programme mentor (Dirk Heylen) for approval. Please

Admission
For admission you need an internationally recognized bachelor's
degree that bears relevance to the field of human media interaction.
This includes computer science, mathematics, physics, computational
linguistics, cognitive science, and (industrial) design. Other
degrees might also be considered. The relevance of the bachelor study
will be judged on an individual basis. Students should have, or be
able to acquire, knowledge in such general topics as logic, statistics
and fundamentals of computer science.
Students who received their bachelor's degree from a Dutch institute
of professional education (HBO) must complete a pre-masters programme
before admission.
Application Procedure
The HMI admission committee will decide if a student can be admitted
or not. Admission may be under specific conditions. UT bachelors can
consult the "doorstroommatrix" (in Dutch) to check if they can
be unconditionally admitted.
