Cross-Language Evaluation Forum

Summary

CLEF encourages research in multilingual and cross-language information retrieval for the European languages by creating an open forum for the exchange of research ideas. CLEF provides a multilingual test corpus for the evaluation of information retrieval systems, consisting of:
  • newspaper and newswire data in Dutch, English, French, German, Italian and Spanish;
  • natural language statements of user information needs (queries);
  • relevance judgements (the "good answers").

Duration and Funding

CLEF is funded in part by the European Commission. The project started in January 2000 and will end in December 2003.
