Introduction

Recently (2011) a new type of probabilistic network or graphical model was proposed, the so-called Sum-Product Networks, SPN for short. This is a network consisting of alternating sum and product layers. A nice introduction on SPN can be found at:

1. http://alchemy.cs.washington.edu/spn/
2. http://lessoned.blogspot.nl/2011/10/intro-to-sum-product-networks.html?m=1

At HMI we are interested if this type of network is applicable in the domain of HMI, for instance Social Signal Processing, Brain Computer Interfacing or Touch Recognition.

Goal

The goal of this Capita Selecta is twofold; firstly to write a State of the Art overview on Sum-Product Networks and secondly to assess the performance of these models on some, to be defined, standard (HMI) benchmarks.
