Academic English Clinic continues Tuesday (tomorrow) August 2nd at 4pm

The Academic English Clinic will continue on Tuesday (tomorrow) at 4pm in the Connect room. Everyone is welcome!

At our last meeting, everyone made a short presentation which we recorded.

We also looked at the pronunciation of the 21 (yes! 21) vowel sounds in English, using English File’s pronunciation website,

https://elt.oup.com/student/englishfile/elementary/c_pronunciation/?cc=us&selLanguage=en

also available as an Android/iOS app

We also looked briefly at linking or liaison of sounds in speech. Good online resources are available on Rachel’s English (Youtube)

https://www.youtube.com/user/rachelsenglish

Homework was to go through recorded talk and mark any parts that may not be good English.

Day 8 (July 25th)!

Today, we had a course about the Social Signal Interpretation framework, given by Johannes Wagner from the University of Augsburg!

Academic English Clinic on Tuesday July 26th at 16:00

The Academic English Clinic will continue on Tuesday (tomorrow) at 4:00. Everyone is welcome!

At our first meeting, we did an informal needs analysis where we discussed our needs and goals for English in our academic work, and everyone gave a short presentation. .

We identified a need for presentation practice, writing skills, pronunciation, and general social English (for networking purposes).

Homework was to put together a short presentation on a topic NOT related to work, and to send samples of troublesome writing to gilmareATtcd.ie so that Emer can put some good ‘bad’ examples together for discussion at the next session.

If you didn’t come on Friday, but would like to join now, please put together a short (3-5 minute) talk on one of the following (NO slides!!)

cats
the moon
concrete
purple
forks (cutlery)
tennis

This talk should not be over-prepared – we want to use it to improve!
