Project Name: Pidgin: Self-learning Cross Lingual Interface
Abbreviation: Pidgin Start date:
April 1, 2002 End date:
September 30, 2004 Project Description: The aim of the Pidgin project is to develop a cross lingual interface
that is capable of improving itself using machine learning techniques.
The various partners in the project are each developing modules
(reflecting their own specialties) ready for integration. With the
finished Pidgin interface it will be possible for a user to type in
their part of a dialogue (with either the system, in a man-machine
dialogue, or with another user, in a person-to-person dialogue via a
chat environment) in their own language. The Pidgin interface will
appear to the user as a blackbox acting as interpreter between them
and their foreign discussion partner. It must give a correct
translation as far as meaning and register are concerned but this does
not necessarily mean that it has to be a grammatically correct
translation: precision above prettiness!
