Believability is in the eye of the beholder

Beschrijving:
Embodied Conversational Agents do not necessarily need to speak with words. Even only their use of gaze can speak volumes. Blinking, making and breaking eye contact, distractedly gazing away towards a sudden movement behind their conversational partner -- an unlimited amount of different behaviors related to gaze and eyes contribute to believable interaction between a virtual human and its human interaction partner.

Some of these behaviors are voluntary, related to communicative intent.
Staring at someone when you want to start a conversation; looking away and avoiding eye contact when you do not want to be interrupted; or dividing your visual attention over multiple participants in the conversation. Other behaviors are not under voluntary control: you blink when startled, look at sudden movement, etcetera.

In this assignment you will work on models for gaze and other eye behaviors for believable virtual humans. A specific focus is the relation between intentional and involuntary eye movements, and on how these can be specified without interfering with each other. The theoretical part of the assignment consists of surveying the literature on models of gaze and eye behavior; the practical part consists of implementing a comprehensive model as a component in the virtual human platform Elckerlyc, and evaluating the result with respect to how natural, believable and understandable the resulting behavior is.
