Afstudeeropdracht

Titel: Interactive Digital Storytelling Using a Multi-Touch Table
Instituut: University of Twente (HMI)
Plaats: Enschede
Land: Nederland
Begindatum: 28-10-2009
Voltooid: Nee
Begeleider: Mariët Theune
Onderwerpen: Multimodal Interactions
Beschrijving:
Interactivity has been a goal since the beginning of the Virtual Storyteller project. Currently the story generation process is a combined effort of several autonomous agents. The user of the Virtual Storyteller can not give input or feedback and therefore has no part in how the story develops. It is nice to listen to a good story, but would it not even be better to influence it or actually participate in it?

In this graduation project, the idea is to let a user control one of the characters in the story world during the development of the story. The most simple form of interaction would be selecting the next action of the controlled character from a list. This is however not a very engaging form of interactivity. Interacting with the story through a visual representation of the story world is probably a more interesting form of interaction. This visual representation can be a map, a bird's-eye view or another view of the story world.

An intuitive form of interaction can be established by presenting this visual representation to the user on a multi-touch table. The multi-touch table based on infrared reflection, as is available at the HMI research group, is also capable of identifying objects through markers. This enables the possibility to let the human participant use physical objects to interact with the virtual story, creating a kind of augmented virtuality.

The first form of interaction to be implemented will be walking through the story world by moving a tangible object that represents the user's character. Other actions can be selected through an interface that involves touching the multi-touch table with one or more fingers. This interface is to be determined during the project.

Titel: Embodied virtual coaches as an example of captology
Instituut: University of Twente (HMI)
Plaats: Enschede
Land: Nederland
Begindatum: 03-09-2007
Voltooid: Ja

Onderwerpen: Intelligent Agents, Human factors

In this research we relate virtual coaches to existing classifications of persuasive technology (captology) and make an attempt to subclassify virtual coaches. An overview of existing applications of embodied virtual coaches is given. Based on ideas and future work from current research, the expected future of virtual coaches is predicted. Based on all gathered information we summarise what can be learned for current and future projects in the Human Media Interaction research group.
